The short answer
Andorra has a mountain climate: cold, snowy winters, mild summers with possible thunderstorms, and strong variations with altitude. The lower parishes are milder than the ski resorts.
Winter
Heavy snow at altitude, with roads sometimes subject to compulsory equipment. Plan for heating and winter equipment.
Summer
Pleasant days, cool evenings at altitude, with possible afternoon thunderstorms.
Shoulder seasons
Spring and autumn are variable, with very distinctive landscapes.
Practical consequences
- Car equipment (tyres, chains): see vehicle.
- Heating and insulation: to be checked in the listings.
- Choice of parish: see parishes.
A continental mountain climate
The climate is described as mountain and continental: cold, snowy winters and cool, sunny summers. The differences are significant between the valley floor of the capital, at about 1,000 metres, and the ski resorts at over 2,000 metres. Official climate normals can be found from the Andorran meteorological service; we do not publish monthly averages for lack of a citable official series.
What this changes for a resident
| Topic | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Heating | A major budget item, depending on insulation and heating type |
| Equipment | Winter tyres or equipment, snow clearance: see vehicle and licence |
| Roads | The Envalira pass peaks at 2,408 m; the Envalira tunnel allows you to bypass it |
| Housing | Exposure, insulation and access matter more than on the plain |
| Leisure | Skiing in winter, hiking and mountain biking in summer |
Going through the tunnel
The Envalira tunnel (2,879 m long) links the Andorran road to the French national road. Its class 1 toll is 8.10 euros in 2026, with a reduction for residents of Pas de la Casa, workers and local hauliers, and it is free when the pass is closed because of the weather.
The transition seasons
Spring and autumn are variable, with very distinctive landscapes and mountain huts sometimes closed. Visit in two seasons before choosing your home.
