Living in Andorra without a car: buses, walking and limits

The short answer

In the central urban area, you can live without a car thanks to buses and nearby shops. In the valleys, and for trips to the ski resorts or the border, a car remains very practical.

Where it is easy

Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany: shops, frequent buses, pedestrian areas.

Where it is harder

Valleys, mountain villages and ski resorts: lower frequencies, greater dependence on a car.

Tips

  • Choose a home near a bus stop.
  • Test your daily journeys before signing.
  • For the border, buses and shuttles exist.

See vehicle and licence and parishes.

The national bus network

The network links Andorra la Vella to the other parishes: L1 (Sant Julià de Lòria – Escaldes-Engordany), L2 (Andorra la Vella – Encamp), L4 (Andorra la Vella – Pas de la Casa), L5 (Andorra la Vella – Arinsal), L6 (Andorra la Vella – Ordino), the circular line LC and an express line. The national bus station is the main hub in the capital. Frequencies range from a few minutes on the express to 30 or 60 minutes on the valley lines, with a limited night service on some weekends.

Free travel

Since July 2022, the service has been largely free, mainly for permanent users, that is, residents. Visitors should expect to pay. Details of fares and timetables are on the official public transport portal.

When a car remains useful

In the valleys, mountain villages and ski resorts, low frequencies and limited timetables make a car very useful, especially for staggered commuting hours. In winter, mountain roads may require equipment.

Choosing a home without a car

  1. Live close to a stop on a high-frequency line.
  2. Test the daily journey at rush hour and on a late evening.
  3. Aim for Andorra la Vella or Escaldes-Engordany: see the parishes.
