Internet and phone in Andorra: operator, fibre and roaming

The short answer

Telecommunications are provided by a national operator. Fibre covers much of the inhabited areas, which makes remote working possible. Roaming with French operators is subject to conditions that you should check before you leave.

Operator

A national operator provides fixed and mobile internet.

For remote working

Check the speed available at the exact address before signing a lease: in the mountains, coverage can vary.

French phone

Roaming is not always included in French plans. Check with your operator.

When you settle in

Arrange your internet subscription as soon as you arrive. See the checklist.

What can be checked

The national operator, Andorra Telecom, has completed the national roll-out of 5G on the 3.5 GHz band, with coverage of 91% of the population across 44 sites, and has upgraded its fibre network to support 10 Gbit/s for all homes and businesses, with the customer's equipment (router) often being the limiting factor. Fibre to the home has been rolled out in the country since the 2010s. The 91% figure measures the population covered, not the territory: in the mountains, mobile coverage can vary.

Before signing a lease

  1. Ask which technology is available at the exact address (fibre in the building?).
  2. Test the mobile coverage in the home, especially at altitude.
  3. Plan a back-up solution for remote working (mobile tethering).

The French phone

Roaming is not always included in French plans for Andorra, which is outside the European Union: check with your operator. A local subscription avoids surprises on a long stay.

If you work remotely

Residency for remote workers assumes that your work relies on telecommunications: see remote workers. A home without a reliable connection puts your activity at risk.
